A month into the season that doubters predicted could end the reign of TV juggernaut “ American Idol ,” new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez have done more than win over skeptics. They’ve made “American Idol” fun again.
“American Idol” averaged 26.2 million viewers in the two-hour opening of its 10th season on News Corp. ’s Fox TV, the show’s second-smallest first night audience and a threat to the network’s ratings dominance.
“American Idol,” Fox TV’s aging ratings powerhouse, will undergo a “creative reinvigoration” next season that will determine whether the show’s almost nine- year run as the most-watched series comes to an end.
CBS, the most-watched U.S. television network, gained viewers in the new season’s second week on the strength of the retooled “Two and a Half Men,” now featuring Ashton Kutcher, and its mainstay dramas.
