The masterly cinematographer Caleb Deschanel gives “Jack Reacher” something of a grainy look, which is just right. Expensive production values weren’t a hallmark of the 1940s noir this thriller efficiently emulates.
Given its unfortunate title, you might think “ Dinner for Schmucks ” is a gross-out comedy. In fact, it’s a sophisticated, clever adaptation of a French film featuring a cute collection of stuffed mice, a blind fencer and a bird that eats out of a man’s mouth.
“The Croods,” the first major animation film of the year, opened as No. 1 in U.S. and Canadian theaters, with $43.6 million in sales for DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. and its distributor, Twentieth Century Fox.
“The Hobbit,” the first of director Peter Jackson’s three movies based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novel, was the top-grossing film at U.S. and Canadian theaters for a second weekend with $36.7 million in sales.
