Jess Jackson, owner of the Preakness Stakes-winning filly Rachel Alexandra, died at age 81 of cancer, according to a statement from his family.
Eskendereya, expected to be the favorite in the Kentucky Derby before the colt was injured, has been retired, owner Ahmed Zayat said.
Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, had an abscess drained in a second procedure following the birth of her foal three weeks ago.
"As long as she continues to progress, we intend to race her with the expectation that she will obtain her fitness level of last year."
