A limestone head by the 20th-century sculptor Amedeo Modigliani sold today at an auction in Paris for 43.2 million euros ($53 million) including fees.
Paintings by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani helped Christie’s sell $285.9 million of Impressionist and modern art in New York yesterday, 80 percent more than a year ago.
An Amedeo Modigliani 1917 nude sold for $68.96 million, a record for the artist, helping Sotheby’s reach its highest total for a New York Impressionist and modern art sale since May 2008.
The recovery in the global art market slowed at the latest bellwether auctions of Impressionist and contemporary works where overpriced lots struggled to attract bidding, dealers said.
